Shikō Munakata, Hibiscus Woman, Rare Colour Print on Washi
A rare colour printing of Hibiscus Woman, a composition by celebrated Japanese artist and printmaker Shikō Munakata (1903–1975).
The striking composition depicts a stylised female face framed by sweeping dark hair, floral motifs and densely patterned forms. A vivid coral-red background contrasts with delicate touches of blue, pink and green, creating an exceptionally strong graphic image.
Printed on very fine Japanese washi paper, the sheet carries Munakata's printed signature, two red seals and an inscription incorporating the date 1973.
This scarce colour version is particularly interesting. Our research identified very few closely matching examples, including one offered by a specialist European gallery. The precise printing method and publishing issue remain unconfirmed.
An arresting work combining Munakata's distinctive visual language with unusually vivid colour.
